My work is an expression of my love of solitude and my search for solace. From the hurried impressions of a fleeting moment when the light is “just so” to the complete abstraction of form and space, the cumulative effect is at once luminous and atmospheric — work that evokes an emotional response whether the imagery be representational or completely abstract.
In my paintings, I try to capture moments when the light creates a contemplative mood compelling the viewer to linger. In my assemblage and monotypes I search for a kind of vocabulary that reflects the struggle between the intrusion of humanity and the harmony of nature.
I am forever moved by the tonal poetry of Rothko and the hopeless romanticism of Freidrich, along with the music of Mahler, Richard Strauss, Chopin and Debussy. The words of Anne Frank inspire as well. Although trapped in an attic, she wrote that “the best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely, or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.”
As you explore both the contemporary and traditional galleries, I hope that you see in my work places dreamlike yet familiar — somewhere you too might go to for solitude and solace or perhaps a nightmare realized. May these creations be as much an expression of your feelings as of my ability. May my work offer you a quiet, peaceful moment in a world of dissonance and chaos or the comfort that your fears are shared and acknowledged.
