Artist’s Statement
My painting is an expression of what I see and what I feel when I am alone in nature. From the hurried impressions of a fleeting moment when the light is “just so” to the abstraction of the distance, the cumulative effect is that of a luminous and atmospheric painting — one that evokes an emotional sense of place.
I am inspired by Anne Frank, who wrote that “the best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely, or unhappy is to go outside, somwhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.”
In each of my paintings I am trying to capture moments when the light creates a contemplative mood compelling the viewer to linger. With thin layers of oil built up over a gesso and acrylic base, my work has a soft but intense glow, with colors that reflect nature’s own palette. These colors are best reflected in my fascination with clouds and their ever-changing shapes. With the low profiles that the cape offers, I can contrast the intensity and movement of the sky with the relative calm of the beaches, trails and marshes that I love to paint.
As you look at my work, I hope that you see a place dreamlike yet familiar — the place that you go to for solitude and strength. Each of my paintings is exactly where and when you think it is, as much an expression of your feelings as they are of my ability. Peace.
