When I’m making art in my studio I often rely on the genius of Mahler along with Richard Strauss to inspire… For me, these two capture the idealistic beauty of the Romantic without denying the dissonant truth underneath. They epitomize the whole of the 20th century and in their work I hear all the discord to come –revenge, lost or hopeless love, the violence of mankind and the desire to be forgiven.
